About Monte-Carlo

Monte-Carlo was a plan before it was a place. In 1856 Charles III granted Napoléon Langlois and Albert Aubert a concession for sea bathing and a casino; the first casino opened in La Condamine in 1862, failed, and moved several times before it settled on the Spélugues plateau across the harbour. On 1 June 1866 the plateau became Monte-Carlo, Mount Charles, and two years later the railway brought the visitors who paid for everything that followed.

What followed is the Monte-Carlo the world knows. The Hôtel de Paris rose on the Place du Casino in the 1860s; the Salle Garnier, by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opéra, opened on 25 January 1879 with Sarah Bernhardt on stage; the Église Saint-Charles was completed in 1883. From 1898 to 1931 trams climbed its avenues.

Today the quartier is the principality's address for hotels, gardens and boutiques, wrapped around the Casino terraces and the Jardins des Boulingrins, and most of the Grand Prix circuit runs through it Its eastern edge runs straight into the French town of Beausoleil.
