Prince Charles III commissioned the Église Saint-Charles in 1879 to serve Monte-Carlo's growing population; Bishop Charles Theuret laid the cornerstone on 11 November 1879, and the church opened on Easter Monday, 26 March 1883, becoming a parish in 1887. Prince Rainier III restored it and renewed the façade for its centenary in 1983. Josephine Baker's family memorial service was held here in 1975.
