About Larvotto

Larvotto is Monaco's shore. Its name comes from the Old French la révote, a bend in the coast, still written on the cadastral plans of the Bas-Moulins shore in the second half of the nineteenth century; earlier the area was simply called the Mouettes, then the Bas-Moulins. Before the town reached it this was marshland, and nearly a third of today's quarter has been won from the sea.

The quarter as it stands dates from 1966, when Prince Rainier signed the ordinance that created it, and from the burying of the railway, which freed the seafront along Avenue Princesse-Grace for apartment buildings. The Larvotto beach, a pebble shore that bathers have used since the railway came in 1868, faces a marine reserve of fourteen hectares where fishing, anchoring and boat traffic are banned, home to noble pen shells and brown groupers.

Along the avenue stand the Grimaldi Forum on reclaimed land, the Japanese Garden, the Sporting and several hotels; to the west, Mareterra – the Le Portier extension of six hectares – was inaugurated in December 2024 and is part of the quarter. Eastwards Larvotto runs to the French border at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin.

Just across the border, in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, stand the Monte-Carlo Beach hotel and its restaurant Elsa.
