The Fairmont Monte Carlo stands on the site of Monaco's first railway station – part of the old station wall survives in one of its offices – and is built partly out over the sea rather than up the rock. Designed by Jean Ginsberg, Jean and José Notari and Herbert Weisskamp, it opened on 20 August 1975 as the Loews Monte-Carlo, became the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel in 1998 and the Fairmont in 2004. It sits on the Grand Prix hairpin, the slowest corner of the Formula One calendar, and the cars run through the tunnel beneath it.
