About La Condamine

La Condamine is the low ground between the Rock and Monte-Carlo, the quarter that lives behind Port Hercule. Its name is medieval: from the Low Latin condominium, the land below the castle kept for the lord and free of dues.

At the foot of the valley stands the Église Sainte-Dévote, the shrine of Monaco's patron saint, a third-century martyr from Corsica whose relics, the story goes, were stolen by thieves who were caught and saw their boat burned – the origin of the boat set alight in front of the church every year on the eve of her feast. The church was restored in the nineteenth century; its marble altar is eighteenth-century.

La Condamine is where the Grand Prix starts and finishes, along the quay. The valley was once crossed by a railway viaduct; the trains now run underground, and the viaduct carries a road between the port and Monte-Carlo. Between the harbour and the slopes the streets are the principality's most everyday – shops, cafés, the market square – a working town under the Palace walls.
