Fort Antoine was built by Prince Antoine I in 1714, during the War of the Spanish Succession, on the north-eastern point of the Rock, with underground barracks and a cistern. The Germans used it as a munitions depot after 1943 and blew it up as they retreated on 3 September 1944; Prince Rainier III had it rebuilt in 1953, and since 1970 it has been an open-air theatre for summer plays and concerts, its bartizan and pyramid of cannonballs framed by pittosporum hedges.
