Port Hercule is Monaco's harbour between the Rock and Monte-Carlo, in use since the Phocaean Greeks of Massalia founded Monoikos in the sixth century BC; Julius Caesar is said to have stopped here on his way to Greece. The modern port was completed in 1926 and much improved in the 1970s; new floating pontoons replaced the fixed piers in 2010–11. It covers about sixteen hectares, berths up to 700 boats with depths from 7 to 40 metres, and in autumn hosts the Foire de Monaco on its quays.
