Sainte-Dévote stands at the mouth of the Gaumates ravine, where tradition says the body of the young martyr Dévote came ashore by boat in 312. A modest chapel stood near the grotto before 1070; it was restored and enlarged over the centuries, and the present church was inaugurated on 25 January 1871, under Charles III. Prince Antoine I gave it the polychrome marble altar with the Grimaldi arms; its stained glass, destroyed by bombing in the Second World War, was restored in 1948.

Each year on 26 January a replica of the saint's boat is set alight on the forecourt, before her feast on the 27th. Grace Kelly left her wedding bouquet here in 1956, and Princess Charlene did the same in 2011.
