The hôtel de ville on the Place de la Mairie began as the Collège Saint-Charles, established in 1881 and later run by the Marianist brothers; the young Guillaume Apollinaire was a pupil here from 1888 to 1896. The building became the town hall, inaugurated in its new role on 20 May 1901, and holds the offices of the mayor and the Conseil communal of Monaco's single commune.
