The Jardins Saint-Martin are the principality's oldest public gardens, laid out from the 1800s by Prince Honoré V on the south-west cliff of the Rock below Avenue Saint-Martin, between the cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum. Winding paths of about 1.1 hectares cling to the rock some sixty metres above the sea and Fontvieille, through Aleppo pines, olives, figs, holm oaks and agaves, past stretches of medieval fortification; François Cogné's bronze of Prince Albert I as a sailor stands at their centre.
