The Stade Louis II, named after the prince who reigned when the first stadium opened in 1939, was rebuilt on reclaimed land in Fontvieille from May 1981 and inaugurated by Prince Rainier III on 25 January 1985. Its architects were Henry Pottier, Philippe Godin, Jacques Rechsteiner, Rainier Boisson and Joseph Iori; the nine arches at one end are its signature. It seats 16,360, and beneath the pitch are the Salle Gaston-Médecin, an aquatic centre and a car park. AS Monaco has played here since 1985, the Herculis athletics meeting since 1987, and it hosted the UEFA Super Cup from 1998 to 2012.
