The house
Le Bristol opened in April 1925 on the rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in the former Hôtel de Castellane, remade in Art Deco with the architects Gustave Umbdenstock and Urbain Cassan.
Its name honours Frederick Hervey, the fourth Earl of Bristol, an eighteenth-century traveller famous for demanding luxury wherever he went.
From June 1940 it served as a residential annex of the American embassy; during the Occupation the architect Leo Lehrman hid in room 106 and, at night, drew the wrought-iron lift that still stands in the hall.
It holds the Palace distinction, with 189 rooms and suites (Atout France).
