The house
The Plaza Athénée opened on the avenue Montaigne on 20 April 1913, an eight-storey eclectic building by Charles Lefebvre and Louis Duhayon.
It was meant to be called simply the Plaza – until a rival's claim to the name made the first director add 'Athénée', the hotel he had run before.
Christian Dior set up his couture house next door in 1947; the façade, hall, great gallery and Montaigne salon have been listed as historic monuments since 1994.
The house joined France's Palaces in 2011; Le Relais Plaza, built in 1936, is protected too.
