The house
The Hôtel Royal was commissioned in 1905 by the Évian mineral-water company, which wanted 'the most beautiful hotel in Europe', and opened on 16 June 1909.
Its architect, Albert Hébrard, gave it clean lines between Art Nouveau and Art Deco; Gustave Jaulmes painted the frescoes of its vaults and rotundas.
It takes its name from Edward VII, for whom a suite was reserved – though the king died in 1910 without ever seeing it.
The house overlooks Lake Geneva from the middle of a 19-hectare park, and received the Palace distinction in 2016.
