The house
At the very tip of the Cap d'Antibes, the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc began in 1870 as the Villa Soleil, a Napoleon III retreat built for writers by the founder of Le Figaro, and became a hotel in 1889.
The Eden Roc pavilion followed in 1914, set above the sea a long walk through the pines from the main house.
When the house watched Red Cross nurses cool off in the Mediterranean during the First World War, it built a seawater pool – and helped invent the Riviera's summer season.
Fitzgerald turned it into the Hôtel des Étrangers of Tender Is the Night; Chagall sketched in its beachside cabanas.
